D6 (1.2436) is an air hardening cold work tool steel. It has excellent wear resistance and medium toughness resulting from a high volume of hard carbides (carbon & chromium) in the structure of the steel. It has high surface hardness after heat treatment, with good edge holding qualities. Other key properties include particularly good dimensional stability and high compressive strength. Not secondary hardenable.
D6 is mainly used for cutting and drawing tools where there is a high wear resistance required, rolls with high dimensional stability, deep drawing tools, forming tools, long run press tools, tools for wire, bar and tube production, cold shear blades for thin sheets, molds for abrasive plastics and ceramics.
