D3 (1.2080) is an oil hardening, high carbon, high chromium cold work tool steel, like D2 but with a slightly higher hardness. It displays excellent abrasion/wear resistance with high compressive strength and hardens with very little change in its dimensions. It is heat treatable but should not be overheated as it will not achieve maximum hardness if heated improperly.
Used for blanking, drawing and forming dies that require maximum resistance to abrasion and corrosion. D3 is used in forming rolls, pressing tools, cutting tools, stamping, punches, shear blades, woodworking.
