Cold Work | A2 | 1.2363 | X100CrMoV5 | P5M |
A2 (1.2363) is a common, general purpose grade of tool steel, used to make tools for shaping metal, wood & other such materials. It is a medium alloyed, air hardening cold work tool steel with 1% carbon, 5% chromium, giving high hardness, good dimensional stability, excellent compressive strength, and good toughness after heat treatment. The wear resistant properties are however intermediate, better than 01 but not as great as in high carbon, high chromium steels such as D2 & D3. The upside is however that it is easier to machine and grind.
Typical applications:
Shear blades, cutting, punching, stamping, bending tools, form rolls, cold pilger mandrels, moulds for plastic processing, embossing dies
AKM Tip:
Whilst A2 is a great all-round tool steel, the metallurgy of tool steels is complex, so if you need any help determining the best steel for a given application, please get in touch with details of your intended usage. There may well be a new specially developed next generation tool steel that will perform even better for your required application.
