A plastics processor will require a long production tool life and tool reliability, with a mix of good corrosion resistance, hardness, toughness and resistance properties. Plastic mould steels are designed to do just this. They have good dimensional stability during heating, good polishability, and high impact strength. Different plastic mould steels will deliver better on each of these properties. Some also offer improved corrosion resistance so are best suited to moulding chemically aggressive plastics, sometimes in the food industry e.g. 1.2083, 1.2316 & 1.2085.
